Monday, Oct. 21

Highlights:

• This morning we learned about Chanie Wenjack and the Secret Path. Ask me the importance of his story.

• In PE, as a school we are committing to walking 600km to raise awareness about Chanie Wenjack.

• For Math, we continued working on our money problems. We then did a fun scavenger hunt called Scoot to help us read different amounts of money.

• In Art, we learned about Diwali and diyas. We created our own classroom clay diya that we will be decorating after it is put in the kiln.

• During Science, we talked about the different properties of solids, liquids, and gases. Ask me what is something that I learned during our balloon demonstration. 

Reminders:

• We are collecting gourds and pumpkins for our learning. If families have any that they can donate to our learning, we would greatly appreciate it!

• Thursday is Pizza Fun Lunch for those that ordered it.
• There is no school on Friday. 

Friday, Oct. 18

Highlights:

• Today in Music we did music sharing. We also worked on kindness sheets that we gifted to someone.
• In Field Study, we did six quick sketches in different areas around the school. Ask me what are some things I chose to focus on and sketch.

 

• We also did a finish up block, where we completed any tasks from the week.
• We had our last reading rotations for the week. Ask me which one I went to.

• A note about ordering NLS t-shirts and sweaters went home today, if you would like to order please do so by Nov. 7
• For the next two weeks we will be doing pumpkin/gourd related activities. We are asking that if families are able to donate a pumpkin or gourd for our learning, we would greatly appreciate it! 

Thursday, Oct. 17

Highlights:

• This morning during Literacy, we had a "power writing" activity! We were given a picture and had to write a story making sure to include what is expected in Grade 3 writing. Ask me what I wrote about.

• In Math, we continued our money counting. We worked with dollars and bills. We also learned how to properly record an amount with the dollar sign and decimal.

• We had a short PE class today due to an unplanned fire drill. The students did a wonderful job getting to our muster point safely!
• In the afternoon, we had Art where we did a Tim Burton inspired self-portrait.

Wednesday, Oct. 16

Highlights:

• This morning in Math, we worked with a variety of coins to skip count an amount in cents. Ask me to show you a combination of coins I can use to make 84 cents.

• For PE, we played Newton Ball! Ask me what this game included and how it combines the skills we have been working on. 

• During Literacy, we  reviewed the expectations for what our writing should include. We will add to this checklist as we learn new skills throughout the year. We then wrote about our strong emotion memory that we planned yesterday. 

• In Science, we did a fun demonstration showing the states of matter. Ask me how an ice cream float shows all 3!

• For Wellness Wednesday, we talked about the importance of our words and how it connects to what we say to others. Ask me what the 10 second rule is and how we can use this when commenting about others. 
• We had our first lockdown practice today. Everyone did wonderful! Ask me what the 3 S's are for lockdown.

Tuesday, Oct. 15

Highlights:

• This morning in Literacy, we continued working on our show, don't tell writing. We created a plan for a memory that we have a strong emotion attached to. Ask me what was my emotion and the memory I picked. 

• For Music, we played the game Pass the Witches Broomstick. Ask me to sing the song for you.

• During Math, we practiced skip counting forwards AND backwards by 3's, 4's, and 25's. Ask me to complete the patterns below:
• Start at 23 and count forwards by 3
• Start at 45 and count backwards by 4
• Fill in the missing numbers: 75, _____, _______, 125, 150, _______
• In Social Studies, we completed our classroom or bedroom maps. 

• For Thoughtful Tuesday, in the spirit of Thanksgiving we wrote on sticky notes a thank you to an adult in the building. Ask me who I wrote to and what I included in the message. 

Reminders:

• Photo orders were sent home today. If you are interested in ordering please do so by Oct. 22. If you would like your child to have retakes, please indicate so on the form.
• Wednesday is the School Council meeting. The Grade 4 and 5 teachers along with Miss. White will be presenting at this meeting.

Friday, Oct. 11

 Highlights:

• This morning, we had our reading rotations. Ask me what stations I did today!
• In Literacy, we reviewed the digraphs "ph" and "wh". Ask me what sounds they make and to give you an example of a word that uses them. 
• For P.E., we played Freedom Frenzy! Ask me what activites we did today.
• During Field Study, we created a map to show the different surroundings in each direction. Ask me to tell you about the different things in each direction.

Next weekend on Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20 are the dates we were given for our Casino Fundraiser. We still have five spots that are not filled.  If we cannot fill all volunteer slots, the Casino cancels our fundraiser and we are not permitted to apply for another 18 months…which would put us to another three years before another opportunity arises.  With this opportunity giving us over $70 000, it is critical that we fill the spots so we get the money!  If you, or your family / friends, are able to help, it would be greatly appreciated!!! Thursday, Oct. 10

 Highlights:

• This morning for Math, we played a new game to help us practicing skip counting. Ask me to explain the game and show you how to play! 

• During Literacy, we learned about show don't tell writing to help our readers visualize. Ask me to give you an example of how I would show someone's emotion without telling you them.

• In P.E., it was our last day of handball. Ask me to tell you about my favourite part of learning how to play. 
• During Art, we read a book called "Brave Like The Buffalo and drew a picture of one. Ask me how I show braveness!

• For Health, we reviewed the zones of regulation and then started creating a zones chart for our visual journal. Ask me to tell you about the different emotions I put in each zone!
