Thursday, Sept. 26

Highlights:

  • For Math we continued practicing our base ten pictures. We talked about expanded form. Ask me to expand the number 765.
  • In PE, we played Moustache Ball.
  • In Literacy, we read a book about Orange Shirt Day. We then wrote on our orange ribbons. Ask me what I wrote on mine.
  • For the afternoon, we met our Kinder buddies and tied our ribbons to the fence outside. Make sure to check out our display!
  • We went on our community walk. Ask me where our evacuation spot is.
  • After, we created a visual journal page about Orange Shirt Day and what we will do make sure others feel safe. Ask me what I included.

Reminders:

  • Tonight from 4:30 - 7:00pm will be our New Year Open House! We are looking forward to see everyone there!
  • There is no school tomorrow and Monday!

Wednesday, Sept. 25

Highlights:

  • This morning in Literacy, we did a problem solving sort. Ask me what was included in each category.
  • For PE, we learned about overhand throwing. Ask me to show you the proper technique.
  • During Math, we continued practicing drawing base ten pictures and showing how we trade up. We then played a new game called I have, Who has.. to practice reading base ten pictures.
  • For Maker Space, we completed our paper plate collaboration challenge. Ask me what my group created!

  • In Health, we read a story called If Instead of a Person. Ask me what the importance message was in the book.

  • Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day.
  • We will be going on our community walk tomorrow afternoon. Please see yesterday's blog for details.
  • Tomorrow from 4:30 - 7:00pm it will be the New Year Open House. We look forward to seeing families!

Tuesday, Sept. 24

Highlights:

  • For Math, we finished our base ten creations. We also reviewed creating numbers and trading them. Ask me to show you how I could draw and trade a number that has 3 hundreds, 18 tens, and 9 ones.

  • For Music, we made our own songs or patterns with the boom whackers in groups. After, we performed them to the class. 
  • In Literacy, we read the story I am Human. We then wrote about what mistakes we have made and the solutions we had for them. Ask me what I included in mine. 
  • This afternoon, we learned about the significance of the eagle feather and what it represents. We read a story called The Eagle Feather. We then wrote a word on our own feather that we feel represent who we are. This was then added to a school display!

  • Thursday is Orange Shirt Day.
  • On Thursday from 4:30 - 7:00pm will be the New Year Open House. Please see yesterday's blog for details.
  • We will be going on our community walk on Thursday. This was the walk that we have postponed last week due to the weather. We will be going at 1:30pm and returning by 2:15pm. The route is below. 
  • One of our reading rotations is listening to stories. We are asking that students bring headphones that they can use during this time if they have any available. Please note, that headphones must be wired.

Monday, Sept. 23

Highlights:
  • This morning in Literacy, we talked about expected behaviours at school and created a list of them. 
  • We also had our first fire drill of the year. Ask me how I felt about it. 
  • For PE, our warm up was Rock, Paper, Scissors Exercise. After, we practiced our underhand throwing. 
  • During Math, we reviewed our base ten pictures. We started to create a picture using different blocks. Ask me what I am creating and what base tens I used. We also did an esti-mystery. Ask me if I was close!
  • In Social Studies, we continued to talk about collaboration and what this looks like at school. We worked on a activity where we have to provide examples. Ask me how I can collaborate. 
  • For Reading Rotations we were introduced to a new rotation called Loose Parts. Ask me what we do in this station.

Reminders:
  • Thursday is Orange Shirt Day. Students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt if they own one.
  • Thursday evening from 4:30 - 7:00pm it will be our New Year Open House. Families are welcome to visit classrooms. There will be food trucks on site and games set up outside. This drop in evening will give you a chance to: 
    • take a walk through the school to see our various learning spaces and the fantastic documentation panels that classes have created outside of the classrooms 
    • see the inside of your child's classroom  
    • say hello to your child's homeroom teacher  
    • see a few things that your child will share about classroom routines, structures and activities  
    • meet / visit with other families outside on the playground / courtyard area.

Friday, Sept. 20

Highlights:

  • This morning we did our final Math reviews. We worked with number lines and balanced equations.
  • We had our last Reading Rotations for the week. Ask me which ones we did.
  • Today, we were also introduced to Epic! This will be added into our reading rotations for next week.
  • We also talked about fire drills and why we do them, what we do, and their importance. We will be having our first fire drill of the year next week!
  • In Health, we created a visual journal page connected to our learning about the medicine wheel. We added the things that we use to take care of our mind, body, heart, and spirit. 

 

Reminders:

  • Our community walk that was planned for today has been postponed to next week. 


September 30th is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada.   On Thursday, September 26th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt or something else with orange to recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Truth and Reconciliation Day. 

Students will be engaging in learning next week to honor this important day. Through read  alouds and activities, students will focus on understanding what they each need to feel safe and cared for at school and to consider this question: “What action can each member of our school community do to make sure every student feels safe and cared for at school, everyday?” This week is an opportunity for Northern Lights students and staff to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community.

Thursday, Sept. 19

Highlights:

  • This morning we had our Terry Fox Run! Ask me how many laps I did!
  • For Music, we used the boom whackers and played a few different songs. Ask me what my favourite song was. 
  • During Literacy, we read a story called The Last Tree. We talked about our actions and the positive and negative consequences that can occur because of the choices we make. 
  • In the afternoon we helped our Kindergarten buddies with their Terry Fox Run. It was our first buddy activity for the year. Ask me what my buddies name was and how many laps we did.
  • For Art, we practiced drawing self-portraits.

  • In Science, we did a STEM challenge where we had to collaborate as a group. Ask what the challenge was and something that makes a good team member.

Wednesday, Sept. 18

Highlights:

  • Today in Literacy, we read a story called In My Heart. We then created a visual journal page of the different things that are important to us. Ask me what I included in my heart.
  • For Math, we reviewed the different base ten blocks and created a variety of numbers using them. We then practiced drawing different amounts. Ask me to show you how to draw 1276 in base ten.
  • During PE, we played Stinky Armpit tag and for the warmup we did Numbers game. Ask me which I liked more.
  • In Maker Space, we talked about the word collaboration and how it relates to our classroom. Ask me what this word means and the illustration I chose to symbolize it.

Reminders:

  • Tomorrow we will be doing our Terry Fox Run. Students are reminded to wear comfortable clothing that they can run in and also have a water bottle. 
  • Subway Fun Lunch is tomorrow for those that ordered.
  • On Friday, Sept. 20, the Grade 3 students will be going on a community walk in connection to our Field Study learning. We will be walking the pathway by the school towards Coventry Hills school. Below is a map of our route. We will be leaving at around 11:00am and returning to the school by 12:00pm. Students are reminded to dress appropriately for the weather and wear proper footwear.

Highlights:

  • Today in PE, we did RPS battle for warmup. Then we play different tag games. Ask me what was my favourite.
  • For Math, we did a subtraction and addition check in. We then used a place value chart to figure out the value of a number.
  • In Literacy, we learned about Terry Fox. Ask me why he is important.

  • For Science, we discussed digital citizenship and created our own passwords to use this year. We then talked about computational thinking and breaking a problem into steps. Ask me what I chose to break apart.
  • We did another round of reading rotations. Many more of us were able to go to the library. The rest will get a chance later this week.
Reminders:
  • Terry Fox Run is on Thursday. We are still collecting donations for the rest of the week.

Highlights:
  • In Literacy, we did a spelling check in. Ask me how I felt about it. 
  • We read the story I Am Me. Ask me some of the things that make me unique.
  • For Music, we had a guest teacher and used the boom whackers. 
  • In Math, we are starting to learn about Place Value. Ask me what the value of 7 is in the number 2754.
  • For Reading Rotations, some of us went to the library to check out new books. The rest of us will continue to go throughout the week.
  • Today in Health, we read the story The Recess Queen. We then talked about the difference between rude, mean, and bullying. Ask me what each one is and an example.

  • Terry Fox Run will be on Thursday. We are collecting donations for Terry Fox. 
  • If you have not done so, please log on to your Power School Parent portal to fill out the demographics form and give consent that allows us to post your child's photo on the blog, if you wish to.

Highlights:

  • This morning in Art, we started to learn about different visual journal techniques that we will be using throughout the year. Today we talked about creating borders and also different ways to colour. Ask me what technique I liked the best.
  • In PE, we did Gaga Ball and then Freedom Frenzy.
  • For Math, we did an esti-mystery. Ask me if my estimation was close!
  • During Field Study, we created impermanent art using materials found in nature. 

Reminders:

  • The last day to order Subway Fun Lunch is Sept. 14 through the Healthy Hunger website.
  • We are collecting donations for the Terry Fox Foundation till Sept. 20. We will do our run on Sept. 19.

Thursday, Sept. 12

Highlights:
  • In Math, we practiced the counting up strategy for subtraction. We then solved addition and subtraction equations using a number line. Ask me how I feel about using this strategy.
  • For PE, we did Four Corners as our warm up. Then we played Fire and Ice tag to help us practice throwing, catching, and moving safely around the gym.
  • During Literacy, we practiced stretching out sentences by answering who, what, when, where, and why. Ask me to give you a sentence that includes all parts!

  • In Reading Rotations, we practiced another writing activity. We chose a topic from a choice board. Ask me what I wrote about. 
  • For Social we read the story The Name Jar. We talked about the importance of our names and how they make us unique.


Reminders:
  • Students were given a small sheet of paper with a few questions regarding their culture. If you could please help complete this sheet and return it by Sept. 18.
  • Please ensure that students have an extra pair of clothes in their backpacks to change into if they get wet. It is important that students are dressed for the weather.

Highlights:

  • This morning in Literacy, we learned about stretching our sentences with conjunctions. We call them FANBOYS! Ask me what is an example. 
  • In Music, we sang a called No Bananas!
  • During Math, we did a Splat! as our warm up. We then reviewed the counting back strategy for solving subtraction equations. We used an open number line to help us. 

  • The Reading Rotation we practiced today was writing. Ask me what I chose to write about for the picture below.
  • In Science, we talked about what computer science is and where we can find it in our world. We then created a KWL chart which includes the things we know and wonder. Ask me what I included in my chart. 
  • For Health, we talked about expected and unexpected behaviours. Ask me what is one expected behaviour that I feel our classroom should have.

Highlights:
  • Both classes went to the library today for a quick orientation. We will get to start signing out books next week!
  • Today in Health, we learned about the red hearts. We each received one. Ask me what they mean.
  • We learned about the medicine wheel. Ask me what the different parts are and something I do to take care of each.
  • We practiced Read to Self and Read with Someone. Ask me what stamina means and also what EEKK stands for. 



  • For writing we talked about simple sentences and then wrote a sentence for different pictures. Ask me what was one sentence I wrote. 
  • In Math, we reviewed the making ten strategy for adding. Ask me to show you how to use this strategy for 8 + 9=
